Krumping-Lise Pierre

Birthplace

·          Krumping is a street dance that originated in the black community of South Central Los Angeles California. This was an underground movement that spread throughout Compton and South-Central, Los Angeles. Clowning was a way for kids in rough neighborhoods of California to escape the gang life and channel their aggression and frustrations in a positive artistic way and not in the violent way that they witness day to day.

·         The word Krump came from a song lyric of the 1990s. Krump is an acronym for Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise presenting Krumping as a faith based art form. The key figure of Krumping is Thomas “Tommy the Clown” Johnson, who is known as the “King/Father of Clowning”. He did not directly create the dance, but krumping did evolve from clowning (which is just a form of krumping in its early stages) that Tommy mastered and created.

What Is Krumping?

·          Krumping/Clowning is a series of movements that are free, very expressive, exaggerated and highly energetic. The movements involve the arms, legs, chest, feet, and the head. Pretty much every part of the body is used to create powerful movements, isolations and so forth.
·         It’s a cross between hip hop, pop lock, and a lot of freestyle by the dancers
·         Performed with the dancer having elaborate face paintings and in their dance groups which are called ‘fams’ or ‘families.’
·         Performed on the streets but has now grown to competitions on various stages
·         A very aggressive dance that is danced to upbeat fast paced hip hop music
·         Mostly free style and is very rarely choreographed
·          Tommy  Johnson opened up a clown dancing academy and started the Battle Zone competition at the Great Western Forum where krump crews and clown crews could come together and battle each other in front of an audience of their peers.
