Romantic Ballet-Kelsey Poole

Romantic ballet is a type of dance that appeals to the five senses. When you think of romantic ballet, you should think of the supernatural, which is the theme of most of the ballets in this time period. Ballet used to be a male dominated art form, but with the development of Corps de Ballet, it shifted the focus to females. It gave women a career field and gave them a chance to be equal with men in several different ways. The use of pointe shoes was introduced in the Romantic ballet era to give the appearance of floating. The tutu was very different from tutus today. The romantic tutu was mad of several layers of tulle and hit at knee length.

Popping-Ansley Kenney

Popping is a street dance from the African American community that came from California during the 1960s – 1970s. Because of its roots in this era, popping is mostly done to funk or disco music. As time progressed electronic music was introduced with popping. Of course popping is utilized with today’s music as well with up to date Hip Hop music. Basically popping is using the technique to quickly contract and relax muscles that cause a jerk in the dancers body. This is what gives it the name “popping”, as you are “popping” your body. This quick contracting and relaxing of muscles is done to a rhythm of a song as well as various movements and such poses. One of the most well known dance moves of popping would be “the robot”. Popping is very closely related to the hip-hop dance style. Popping is one of the earliest funk and street dance styles. It can also be assumed that popping is part of break-dance. Popping can be done in dance battles, where one performer tries to out dance the other performer.

The intensity of popping goes along with
the rhythm of the music. While popping a person quickly contracts and relaxes there muscles to give the effect that perhaps his or her joints are actually “popping”. This is done continuously with the song. There are differences between normal Hip Hop dancing and popping. Hip Hop dance is very hard and strong with precise movements. Most people try to be stiff so it looks like they are very good. However, with popping you let your muscles go stiff, then loose, then stiff again and continue this technique. There are many notable poppers, some include: Suga Pop, Nam “Poppin” Hyun Joon, and Michael “Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers. Popping was originally done to funk or disco music, but as time progressed so did the type of music to modern to electronic or Hip Hop music.  This is mostly a street dance, however, there are some schools that teach Popping such as “The New York City Popping Dance Academy”.
